THE ARTIS LOCAL DEAD
Drawings/Pitture (2013)

He found the shape before he understood it. It was simple: a black circle on a rough wooden surface. No explanation, no context. Just a form that absorbed attention. He held it like something fragile, like something sacred. He believed without language for it that meaning could live inside a symbol, that a mark could contain a world. So he carried it. He showed it to others, or maybe to no one. The gesture itself was enough. To present was to declare: this matters. The circle did not answer, but it resisted being ignored. It pulled the gaze inward, like a small gravity. At first, that was enough. Then the room appeared. White walls. Clean space. A table. A label: โARTE!โ. The word stood upright, confident, final. The object was placed nearby, leaning slightly, as if unsure of its own position. Something had shifted. The symbol no longer needed to be discovered it had been named. And in being named, it lost something. The circle remained black, but no longer infinite. It became an example, a piece, a reference. People could walk around it. They could interpret it, consume it, dismiss it. The mystery had been translated into a function. The artist stood there, watching. He waited for the symbol to speak again. For the silence to deepen, to open. But the silence was different now. It was no longer charged it was empty in another way. Not absence, but exhaustion. The circle slipped. Not physically, but conceptually. It detached from the surface, from the wood, from the object. It moved slowly, inevitably toward him. Toward the only place where it could still exist without explanation. Inside. He did not resist. The mark appeared on his face, replacing structure with void. It did not hurt. It did not transform him in any visible, dramatic way. But something collapsed. The distance between creator and symbol disappeared. There was no longer something to show. Only something to be. But even that did not last. Because the room remained. The table remained. The label remained.

The word stood, untouched by the transformation. It did not register the loss. It did not need to. It functioned independently, detached from meaning, sustained by repetition. The artist faded. Not into death, not into tragedy but into irrelevance. His body became shape, then shadow, then surface. Eventually, he occupied the same status as the object he once carried: something to be seen, not understood. Or perhaps not even that. Because now the system no longer required depth. It required visibility. Circulation. Engagement. The symbol had been too slow, too silent, too resistant. So it was replaced. What remained was not art as language, but art as signal. Immediate, consumable, forgettable. The circle, once dense with possibility, would now be reproduced endlessly emptied, stylized, optimized. Entertainment. The room did not change. The label did not fall. The table did not break. But the function of everything inside it had shifted. The artist was no longer necessary. The symbol was no longer effective. And meaning if it ever existed had nowhere left to settle.
